ArticlesWound Care Education Instutute: "Cancer Patient’s Husband Invents Device to Help Others"
"I have been an RN for almost 30 years in Jacksonville, FL. My first position was as an RN on a Surgical unit. This is where I was first exposed to caring for patients with suction drains.
As a new nurse, I was taught that drain tubes needed to be cleared. I was taught that "stripping" the drain would clear out any debris in the tube. To do this, I placed the tube between 2 alcohol wipes to slide down the tube. I felt this worked, but I questioned if I was using enough pressure on the tube. I was later taught to put the tube between a pen and my thumb to slide down the tube. I felt this was more effective, but I was always conscious not to put too much pressure on the tube.
This is actually the technique I taught our patients and their family. The common concern was whether they were using too much pressure or not enough. With our elderly patients or patients with arthritic hands, this technique was difficult. When I was introduced to the Tube-Evac device several years ago, I was excited for both myself and our patients. Every patient and nurse that has used the Tube-Evac device has not only been amazed by this device but thankful for the ease it provides when having to strip the suction drains. Teaching has also become simplified for our patients. Thank you Tube-Evac!!!"
